Key Idea: Make A Spiritual Connection

Host Hattie Bryant points out that Ken Done believes his customers buy pleasure. If they pay a great deal of money for a large original painting, they must derive a large amount of pleasure from the purchase!

Key Question:

A:

Yes. No matter what people buy from you, this can happen when the individuals who work for you are able to form relationships so that the customer feels appreciated and even loved.

Use Ken Done's art as a metaphor for your product development and service deployment.

Visual beauty is inspiring and refreshing but so is a smiling face and a friendly, "Hello." Quality is inspiring, too. The perfect blue print, the perfect oil change or the perfect transaction can be a spiritual experience for a customer. \

Ebby Halliday whose company does $5 billion a year in real estate sales says they try to tie up every deal with a bow.

Think about it

What can you do to bring your customers more joy? What can you do to shift their mood from negative to positive?

"I see business... as the most creative act of all." - Ken Done

Sydney: Meet Ken Done.  He has become one of Australia's most  beloved and respected artists with his own world-class following. We all struggle to master our talents and apply these talents in a meaningful way. That's life. And, that is how the best among us also define our work.

Meet a man who spent eighteen years mastering his craft and learning business skills. Then, he broke away to go down his own path.  Almost unwittingly he started a business through which he learned how to leverage his art in creative ways.

This business is a family businesses.

You meet Ken Done, his wife, Judy, and their daughter and son. Ken was never a starving artist yet he certainly paid his dues. With over 150 others working within this family enterprise, they make art affordable, often wearable and  even whimsical.

Today you meet an artist who like so many others follows his own heart. Often there is a price to pay  among the art community's elite.  In the earlier days they were not gentle on this man and his work. But Ken Done stood firm within his vision, he persevered, and today even his critics are giving him his due.

Make A Spiritual Connection

HATTIE: The artists are leading the way for small business. We all need to pay attention as none of us can compete with big business in the price-driven world of the ordinary. People don't just want swimwear today. They want Ken Done's interpretation of sun, sand, water and beauty. They want his world of color and bold strokes. People don't just want furniture for their home. They want images to gaze on that will take them to other worlds or make them smile or help them meditate or relax. This is what art does; it changes our mood. It's better than Prozac or wine, and those of us that have something we love looking at know what I'm talking about.

Ken Done's work is more important than ever. It is a metaphor for personal growth. It is a reminder that man does not live by bread alone. Better to have fewer televisions and more art for the improvement of our souls.

And there's another lesson for all business owners: What can you do to bring your customers more joy, to shift their mood from negative to positive, to have a soulful impact? Figure that one out and you'll be as happy as we found Ken Done to be.
