Key Idea: Win Coveted Awards

Small companies can look big by winning international awards.

Key Question:

Get outsiders to tell the world how great your company is.

Q: Why should you take the time to submit to the award application process?
Winning a coveted award creates a win-win-win. First, your customers win because you are forced to do quality work that will stand up to the scrutiny of wise judges. Second, your employees win because they will be called upon to reach deeper. They will be asked to set a higher standard for themselves. And, when the award comes home, they are feel proud to be part of a company that is recognized as outstanding among its peers. The business wins because winning an award will have a positive impact on sales. The awards process creates an an achievement momentum which doesn't stop even when the contest is over.

Think about it

What awards should you go after?

Clip from: Knowledge Management

Westerham and Stockport, England: In this episode of the show we go inside truly global businesses that are changing the way we know things and understand who we are. They are each uniquely helping us all get the information revolution under control and helping to open the way to a knowledge evolution.

You'll meet Miles Corbett and David Bowden and their team in Westerham, England. In their hands information becomes knowledge, and their programs are saving businesses millions of dollars every year.

Then later in the show, you will meet Bill Daring, Jon Keefe, Nick Smith and the team at KMPInternet of Stockport. They are eliminating mundane tasks from the work area and creating access paths over the barriers between languages.
Historically, if knowledge were on a grocery shelf, it would have been among the most perishable items. Here we meet people who are giving knowledge much more shelf space, at a much lower cost, and as a durable good.

Today intellectual property is as important as physical property. Physical property sustains the body -- food and shelter; intellectual property sustains the mind, imparting meaning and value to life.

Win Coveted Awards

HATTIE: (Voiceover) In 2002, Transition Associates and KMPInternet won the coveted Beacon Award; Transition Associates for best e-learning solution, and KMPInternet for best e-business solution.

Unidentified Man #2: (Voiceover) Beacon Award winners deliver total customer solutions.

HATTIE: (Voiceover) There was a time when the sun never set on British soil. Now you can be sure the sun never sets on British software.

MILES: And it's quite a thing for us that we're really, I suppose, giant-killers in terms of the way that we win these awards.

ROGER: We're so small and we're up against such large companies that--we knew we were up for it, but we weren't really expecting to win. So it was fantastic when Barry came back from Orlando with that award. Just brilliant, a real boost for everyone in the studio.

MILES: And it doesn't take a big team to have a big impact. It just takes a small, bright team.

JON: And we punch above our weight. People say that all the time to us. And that's the important thing. That's the enjoyment about it.

DAVID: I particularly don't like to be licked by a problem. I like to see that problem dead, you know. But that can mean sticking at it.

JON: I knew we could do it, and that actually validates what I believe in, is that we can compete with large companies and win.

HATTIE (In the Studio): Every day, we are challenged to know who we are, what we are to do with our days and who we want to become when we finally grow up. It may sound like a challenge for someone in junior high school, but because of today's technology and communications tools, it is a question that we will all address throughout our lives. Transition Associates and KMPInternet are on the leading, bleeding edge of knowledge management. And as a result of their work, the world is becoming a more knowing place; yes, even a better place. And we are all challenged to be better people. We'll see you next time.
