Key Idea: Find the Talent Under Your Nose

Zia was surprised that they could find the talent they need to grow right in their small town of Silver City, New Mexico. More...

Key Question:

Typical small business owners, Terry and Joe thought they were the only people in Southern New Mexico who could take pictures and design a magazine. As the market accepted and praised their products, the two had to find a way to add staff.

Q:  What might have been Zia's problem in hiring people who can write, design and take amazing pictures?

Everyone knows the best people in these fields are in New York City or Los Angeles. This is not a construction company or a retail store. This is a high-end magazine publishing business. However, as you have learned from Joe, they have found terrific talent in Silver City and other even smaller towns in the area.

Joe is most impressed with the great writing being submitted by some of the newest members of the Zia team. The time is right for Zia. People are leaving the big cities to find beauty and quiet in rural areas. Also, Zia is hiring and teaching people who show potential. Zia is a good place to work. It produces a quality product and we know that quality attracts quality.

If every small business in your community were to follow the example of the owners in this program and add just one job this year there would not be enough people to fill the jobs. These business owners in today's show are proof that good ideas with good execution create good work and many jobs. We small business owners are the artists, the innovators, the problem solvers, the creators of wealth and work. With every employee we hold in our hands a sacred trust.

Think about it

Where is your next hire? Does your business languish because you haven't brought in the right talent? What can you do to be the quality employer?

Clip from: Job Creation In New Mexico

Meet Linda Brewer of Blue Dome Gallery in Silver City.

Southwestern, New Mexico: In this episode of the show, we go into New Mexico as guests of the Chamber of Commerce of Las Cruces and Silver City. When we asked them, "What is your biggest business problem?" both said "Job creation." Yet, when we asked, "Are there businesses that are creating jobs?" over 100 businesses were recommended!

So, we asked practically every business advocate in the State of New Mexico,  "Would you take a look at this list and tell us who would you'd like to represent your state on national television?" It quickly became apparent that any  businesses from that list of 100 would have been fine.

In this episode we visit with five businesses and try to learn why they are being so successful in creating work for others.

We learned a lot.

Find the Talent Under Your Nose

JOE: Once we reached a point where Terry couldn't handle all of the designing, then we started bringing people in, and at first our thought was, `God, we can't possibly do this in Silver City.

Somewhere along the line, we're going to have to end up in Santa Fe or in some place like that,' because the talent, we didn't believe, was here. But fortunately, the people that we found in Silver City were very trainable. Some of them had some schooling and even through our participation with some of the high-school programs and, of course, we have a small university here. They had a lot of excellent computer training that we were able to build on.

And then more recently, of course, the people who are moving to Silver City from other parts of the country because of the quality of life here started groping around for someplace where they could use their talents. And we were able to nab some really good people.

What we are able to offer, of course, even for the people who have lived here all their lives, is the quality of life of this area. And that's a big reason for coming to Silver City. And then within Silver City itself is just an exciting job. To be able to do this type of quality work as opposed to the football program is just something that you don't normally find in a community this size. It's really very exciting to know that that quality of people are available to us, and so no doubt we can utilize that for the growth of the business. And so, yes, we'll continue doing this type of publication, but I think we can expand to a larger area and we've dang sure got the people that can do it.

HATTIE: So you having fun?

TERRY: We love it.
