Key Idea: Stay True To Yourself

Nigel Skeffington left a great job when his boss wouldn't agree to act on new ideas. More...

Key Question:

A:

Change and move on if you have to.

Q:  Why would an employer not want to act on the good ideas of employees?

A: If the company is making money doing one thing, changing or even becoming distracted by a new idea can be risky. Also, the employee may not be able to articulate their concept or the employee may not respected by the employer. Nigel was respected but his former employer just didn't believe that time management required tools for collaboration. The concept was on the bleeding edge and the employer was too far behind the adoption curve.

Think about it

Are you ignored by your boss?  Can you turn your ideas into a business?

Clip from: Time Technology where Technology Warps Time

Godalming, Surrey, United Kingdom:   Meet the Skeffingtons - Rosemary, her husband, Nigel, and his brother, Peter.  They introduce us to a rather simple technology that brings people from different time zones into the same time and creates a ubiquitous space that everybody shares.  Their business is Time Technology.

What they do is teach and implement collaborative technologies. Though this technology raises some real questions about our perception of time, for them, it is just a fact that literally hundreds of people can be part of an online meeting, working on the same content, though separated by time zones and continents.

Time and space are so fundamental most of us just take the two for granted. It just seems like another application of technology, but it is the beginning of a very significant revolution --  at long last long-held beliefs about what is possible within a given space and time is radically changing.

Stay True To Yourself

What triggered your decision to quit your job and start a business?

NIGEL:  When we started out, it was very much driven by my passion, my sales activity.

I was frustrated with the company I worked for previously. They were into time management. They worked on individuals.

I believed even though we are individuals, that we work in groups and we have to share information and work together outside of just ourselves.

No matter how much I tried to persuade them we needed to go for the group area, they did not respond so consequently, I ultimately left them and came across this product, Lotus Notes, and all of a sudden I saw the opportunity to collaborate and work in groups.

Editor's Note:  Online ollaboration is still a young technology.  There is something magical that happens when many people  all focus on the same idea, the same question or the same problem at the same time no matter where they are.
