Key Idea: Learn From Other Industries

Host Hattie Bryant says you can learn from Reed Pigman that it is just as hard to stay the best as it is to become the best.

Key Question:

A:

Look over not up. There's no "up" for Reed. There are thousands of independently owned FBOs in the US and Reed is considered one of the top ten. When he goes to visit other FBOs it is hard for him to find ideas because he's already doing everything his colleagues are doing. To get better, he has to study the best in other industries. He looks at those who provide service and/or sell to the high-end marketplace. This includes white table restaurants, spas, boutiques and the Dallas-based Neiman Marcus.

Think about it

Where else do your customers shop? What can you learn from those businesses?

Clip from: Texas Jet

Fort Worth, Texas: There are no lines. No crowds. No delays. Just red carpet treatment all the way. And, it is not just for the wealthy anymore. Here at Meacham Field and in 5000 other small airports around the USA, small business owners service, sell, own, and use private jets. This is the other airport in town.

This is the story of Texas Jet which is FBO, Fixed-Base Operation; they provide all the ground-based services required by aircraft owners and operators. The term, FBO, originated back after World War I to describe the first aviation businesses that developed a permanent base of operations to deliver services at airports. That name stuck. Here we open the door of private jets, charters, fractionals, and empty legs. With the help of the Internet bookings, you could easily be taking a little jet rather than drive your car.

Founder Reed Pigman says the pilots are his core customer base;  and, for many years now, these pilots voted Texas Jet to be one of the Top Ten Independent FBO's in the United States. So, out of 5,000 choices, pilots say Reed and his team are among the best. There's more. As a distributor for Phillips 66 Jet Fuel, Reed also takes the lead. Texas Jet has been recognized by Phillips 66 as one of a hand-full of distinguished partners among some 600 distributors.

Learn From Other Industries

HATTIE: There are 4,000 fix-based operators in the US, and Texas Jet has been in the top 10 two years in a row. Reed is too humble to say that he can't learn from others who run FBOs, but when you are the best, where do you go for inspiration? Reed now looks to the hospitality industry for service-improvement ideas. How does a five-star hotel treat people? How does a white-tablecloth restaurant take care of customers? If you are good enough, as Reed is, to be at the top of your own industry, don't rest. Find your inspiration outside your inner circle. (Voiceover) You can learn more at SmallBusinessSchool.org.
