We filmed these colleagues pouring over their lap tops while enjoying lunch a perfect summer day overlooking the famous Sydney harbor.  Why stay in your office when you don't have to?

Make things simple.  This is the beauty behind the iPod and other Apple products, right?

We guess that if you are reading this you are old enough to remember when you had to enter the same data over and over because software has been stuck in silos.

Q: What is just one example of how Brookstone simplified the lives of customers?

A: They developed a suite of software programs lets the user enter data once. We stand up and applaud. Ease of use and simplicity go hand in hand but we think each idea is so important that we separated it here. A cell phone could make a person's life easier but add complexity. From what we can tell, Virtual Office is making lives easier and simpler. That is a formula for business success.

Run Your Office From Your Pocket.  Be anywhere!  Be everywhere!

Perth and Sydney:  Meet the folks of Brookstone Technologies. They created virtual office software so they could be anywhere and still have their entire office with them.  

Perth is the most remote, largest "big city" on earth (three hours by airplane to another city over 1M), yet it is in a time zone that is home to half the earth's population!  It is known as GMT+8 (Greenwich Mean Time plus 8 hours). Unidentified Man #1: What we've done is we've brought all these applications together with a centralized contact manager. And from now on whenever we grow this and build new applications, we simply link our contact manager to the new application. All those links are already in place, we just have to program in a few more links and, voila, we've got a new system we can use very quick. I like it from that perspective. It's a simple design, but it took a long time to figure it out.

JOHN: For example, one of the modules we have is a customer care module, which is essentially a help desk. So I can from my help desk take a call from a customer and I can automatically assign it to an engineer who can fix the problem. And not only does he not have to be in the building, he can be remote and I can get to him wirelessly or by a telephone. But he doesn't have to be an employee. So he could also be a contractor.

HATTIE: So, JOSEPH, I was thinking maybe you could explain how the project manager works.

JOSEPH: OK. Let me just get in and show you. Project manager. Basically you can create a main project, and then you've got options, creating tasks under the main project.


JOSEPH: Or you can separate the project into subprojects as well...

HATTIE: Right.

JOSEPH: ...and then create the tasks under the subprojects.


JOSEPH: So let me just show you.

HATTIE: So it depends, with certain customers they do the subprojects, and some don't, right?

JOSEPH: Depends on how big a project it is.

HATTIE: The complexity.

JOSEPH: Yeah. If it's a big project, then you can separate down.

HATTIE: Sure, sure.

JOSEPH: Just going to create a new project. OK. Then you select your customer for the project, and the name of the project, a description.

HATTIE: Right.

JOSEPH: It'll keep track of your hours.

HATTIE: Right.

JOSEPH: And like you say takes 100 hours to complete. And then you can say...

HATTIE: I'm only...

JOSEPH: ...`Notify me if there's 20 hours left.'

HATTIE: Oh, I see. I see, I see. Sort of a motivation technique. Sort of, you've only got 20 hours left in your budget, so you better hurry up, right?
