SPONSORS OF KRWG-TV.
On becoming a local sponsor
of Small Business School (SBS).

This multifaceted relation includes five very important local constituencies:

  1. The people of the local public television station, KRWG-TV
This is Corporate Support Manager, David Holly (above).
He can be reached at (520) 621-7357.

  2. The weekly viewers of the show, Small Business School.

  3. The small business owners throughout the area
In any designated market area (DMA) the ratio of small businesses to the total population is between ten-to-one (10:1) and in heavily industrial areas (15:1). We take the total population of the broadcast area of the station and divide by twelve to obtain the approximate number of small businesses in the area.

That number is the SBS goal for weekly viewership. When other constituencies are included such as students, corporate wanna-be’s, corporations that want to work with small businesses, and employees of small business, this viewership number could, of course, be substantially higher.

Recommended for Selection: When asked, "Which businesses have created jobs over the past year, this list emerged. Every business recommended by their Chamber is eligible for a schholarship to Learn Online and from within Learn Online, the business owner can create an executive overview, transcript and study guide just by answering questions. We did a very special episode about job creation with two businesses in Las Cruces and two in Silver City and one in Deming.

  4. The small business advocates of the area
The servicing organizations that help small businesses such as the Chambers of Commerce, the Small Business Development Centers, the Economic Development Commissions, the Workforce Initiative Commissions, the business press, local business trade associations, and the business faculty of the colleges and universities.

It is a large constituency and any sponsor of the show would do well to work with every one of them.

  5. All the potential business partners for the show
A partner for the show is a local support of the station. These sponsorship dollars all stay with the local station. Local sponsorship benefits for our viewers, especially our small business owners, our potential viewers, and the comercial small business advocates of the area. This group includes utility companies, publishers, cable companies, telephone companies, SBA preferred banks, law practices, and accounting firms.

On occasion it has included Chambers of Commerce and SBDCs, and Economic development Commissions.

Sponsorship includes:

  • The opening and closing boards of the show. Usually a 48 week contract.
  • Options to be cited on the SmallBusinessSchool web site within several pages:
    • The state’s small business resources page: resources.jsp
    • The state’s Small Business School broadcast schedule: broadcast.jsp
    • The links from the sponsor’s name can go to special pages on the sponsor's site.
    • SBS will host and provide access for sponsors to maintain very easily a special page on the SBS site.
  • Once we install a local server for streaming video, additional benefits become available:
    • Weekly collaboration events with viewers after the show completes airing. The voice of the station comes on the air and says, "Join us now at http://SmallBusinessSchool.org/NM and meet "one of the Small Business Advocates of New Mexico." It is an open forum to discuss the key points of this episode and to talk about business in New Mexico."
  • Scholarships to the Small Business School LearnOnline. SBS will grant to the sponsor scholarship value equal to the 100% of the value of the sponsorship. LearnOnline is broadband access to all the streaming video on the web site. A particular class (a value of $19.95) based on episodes taped in New Mexico can be created. The value of an entire course of ten classes is $99 per year.

A working coalition to help small business owners.

SBS believes it is important for all of us to serve in order to sell. It is a message heard from highly-successful business owners from around the country. There are two boards, an opening and closing board.

We propose that the sponsor of our show strongly consider using the closing board to help promote some of the small business service organizations in the area. For example, if the mission of the Small Business Development Centers were to be lifted up, the voice of the closing board might say something like this: "We of ______________________ want your business to thrive. If you ever need help, the good people at our Small Business Development Centers are waiting to help you." And while that is being voiced, the names, addresses and telephone number of the SBDC offices in the state roll within an image or frame that demonstrates the largesse of the sponsor.

Because PBS/FCC does not allow advertising on public television, the local station always helps to create the opening board.

Not to be overly dramatic (or to abuse the words of a famous orator), we do have a dream. And it is about people truly discovering their unique gifts for creating something from their hearts and minds, truly things or services that they treasure, but because they do it so well, they create an abundance and they are able to sell it. That is the SBS definition of a good business.

Here are our primary documents about the show:

Also, local sponsors should be aware that there are national sponsors such as the United States Postal Service (USPS) and Thomson Learning. The USPS is a very active sponsor and they currently have a viewer tune-in poster in every post office in America. Here is a link to the current poster.

Also, every week the current shows in the greater Las Cruces and New Mexico are all linked: LasCruces.jsp. On these pages, if you click on the show number, it goes to a profile/overview page of the current show.

There is also access to the transcript and case study guide that we prepare for PBS ALS.

Increasingly the SBS show logo appears on homepages of the public television stations, Chambers of Commerce, and SBDCs, and links back to the SBS site. If SBS continues to offer free streaming video through these selected pages, there should be an incentive for the web visitors to come back frequently and to check out other offers around it.

SBS is also proposing that the station participate with the sponsor in an event whereby the station and the sponsor recommend as many as 100 top-quality small business owners to come to an event to watch a show as it is broadcast, then have Hattie Bryant or Bruce Camber work with a judging panel to select one of the 100 for a show, announce it, then go do the show. However, for all the others, the group does one-minute profiles over the course of the year. It would be great event for everybody!
