Question: If our small businesses were to hire Iraqis to translate our web sites into Arabic, could that help bring peace to the region?

National Small Business Week: In May 2004 in Orlando, Don Evans, Secretary of Commerce, and Hector Barreto, SBA Administrator, held a joint Town Hall Meeting to discuss pressing small business issues in the nation. It was televised on CNN/fn.

At this Town Hall Meeting Bruce Camber, asked questions about the possible impact small businesses could have if they were to hire Iraqis to translate their web sites into Arabic. Though both Evans and Barreto enouraged the development of the concept, the SBA, Commerce, and State (DOS) are such deep bureaucracies, it would take them years to create an infrastructure to help make anything happen.

Each small business owner is like a soverign state. You can decide to do anything. You invent each day, each week, each month and each quarter. Hector Barreto and then Secretary of Commerce Don Evans both supported the concept that the small businesses of the USA could help. If enough were involved, it might help to turn around the direction of this war. Who wouldn't want to support our troops and bring peace to Iraq?

Such activities could serve everyone's best interests; For us, it opens new commerce and mutual understanding. After a person translates web pages into Arabic, he/she would be in position to begin advising their small business client (that's you and me) further to position those products and services to sell into the Arabic world. The result, extending the essentials of democratic capitalism, might help to change the dynamics of the region.

The work of Prof. Michael Novak of the American Enterprise Institute is an important study of the first principles of democracy and capitalism (link in lower right box). All of us need to spend a little time studying such foundations so we can readily articulate the essence of this country's economic, political and moral systems. Though this initiative began at that time, not much has happened, but that can change.

Why not spend a few dollars directly with some Iraqi people? The Baghdad Job Center is open today, 24x7. Invite somebody to translate your web site today!

Translate your web site, first into Arabic (over a billion people), then Chinese (another billion), Hindi (another billion), and Spanish (another billion).

Why not? It'll push each of our businesses in new ways, plus we can make a difference in this world. It may cost us a few thousand a piece today. That's business! And perhaps, that's opposed to paying it out in taxes. Although some would argue, most governments do work to try to bring a little peace to the world.

Baghdad: The Baghdad Job Center will have 1000 translators in line once the word gets out on the street. When we first posted our job opening, there were virtually 15 people who signed up overnight.

We can change the way the world sees the USA, sees our culture, our beliefs, and historic toleration of all religions.

Our television culture has polluted the world's opinion about this great country. And, so much of television has even polluted our own self perception.

Things need to change. There are 25 million of us small business owners. There is no other singular group in the USA with both the financial resources and the power of their will to do it.

We encourage you to consider having your web site translated in Arabic as a first step in opening your business to the Arabic world. They have plenty of our dollars to buy product and services that we can ship back to them. Our single greatest export should be our willingness to start, run, and grow new business.
