RETAIL: On Main Street, in malls and just along the way, it is defined by the word, OPEN (regular hours) and people just walking in at any time during the day. Hopefully they've come to buy something. But, they could be doing competitive shopping, just snooping around... you can never fully know.

Small Business School   Small Business School Stories about retailers on Small Business School

Since 1994, Small Business School has traveled throughout the USA and around the world to visit people who have had the audacity to start and grow their business right on Main Street. These are retail shops where you have to have regular hours and please people who come walking in off the street.

The first rule of retail - you have to like people!

Meet many different people with different styles and different insights about what has made them successful.

There are many case studies below. And, there are eight steps (just below the listings). First, be cautioned. All these people have been very successful yet all of them failed at least once. Not everything they did delivered results. Retail is tough and competitition is always around the corner, in the mail box, and now on the web (and possibly on the other side of the world).

You may also want to review all the stories of those people in other business types that you find interesting (Of course, restaurants are retail, yet so large, they are in a category by themselves).

Walk through the study guides for all those business types that interest you. Insights from other businesses are transferable! If you can not find a business category, please let us know.

Also, learn more from the following: Get to know the National Retailers Federation (NRF) and even the your state associations, i.e. Alabama Retail Association. Don't be afraid of the "big boys." Also, network with everybody in your community. Find your local Chamber of Commerce by clicking here. At the very least, go to your local Chamber of Commerce, and become friends with the other retailers in town.
  • NRF: PR Contacts - Ellen Tolley or Scott Krugman (202) 783-7971 tolleye@nrf.com or krugmans@nrf.com
  • Review our Business Basics.
  • Review answers to the question: "Should I buy a franchise?"
Starting a business from scratch is not for everyone and it can be very lonely.
