	Compete against Lowes... Home Depot? The best of Main Street is taking a beating. Deland, Florida: Big business homogenizes. Small business diversifies. On the Main Street of this town they celebrate diversity. Yet, just on the outskirts of town looms Lowes and Home Depot. What can a family-owned hardware store on Main Street do to survive? How does one compete? We do not have any simple answers. We know that small businesses must develop a many-sided customer relation that competes in value against the volume discounts of the "big box" retailers.
