Westerham and Stockport, England: In
this episode of the show we go inside truly global businesses that are changing
the way we know things and understand who we are. They are each uniquely
helping us all get the information revolution under control and helping to open
the way to a knowledge evolution.
You'll meet Miles Corbett and David Bowden and
their team in Westerham, England. In their hands information becomes knowledge,
and their programs are saving businesses millions of dollars every
year.
Then later in the show, you will meet Bill Daring,
Jon Keefe, Nick Smith and the team at KMPInternet of Stockport. They are
eliminating mundane tasks from the work area and creating access paths over the
barriers between languages.
Historically, if knowledge were on a grocery
shelf, it would have been among the most perishable items. Here we meet people
who are giving knowledge much more shelf space, at a much lower cost, and as a
durable good.
Today intellectual property is as important as
physical property. Physical property sustains the body -- food and shelter;
intellectual property sustains the mind, imparting meaning and value to one's
life.

- EIGHT STEPS: STUDY BUSINESSES LIKE YOUR
OWN. We all go through many of the same problems and make the same
mistakes. One of the purposes of this show is to have others mentor us and show
us the way. The business owners who are profiled here have been selected by
their conmmunities as role models for the rest of us. They have successful
businesses and they are generous people.
- ASSOCIATIONS,
SPECIALISTS, EVENTS, PAPERS:

- COMMENTS
OR QUESTIONS. We invite your comments and questions. Was the show
inspirational and/or educational? We hope this show is both!
- JOIN, JOIN,
JOIN: Your professional
associations in your industry are your key to continuing education, market
research, collaborations, strategic partnerships, capital and so much more ...
often you'll find that you enjoy like-minded people and many will become
friends for life.
- SUPPORT PUBLIC TELEVISION:
Become a member of your local station. If you are already, great. If not
and your business is doing well, consider joining the Producers' Club
($1000).
- ABOUT THE FUTURE: A note from the editor /
executive producer
Though we can grow food virtually anywhere and we can
build virtually anything, the mind -- the intellect -- remains elusive. And as
long as it does, there will continue to be fundamental disagreements about the
meaning and value of so much of history, and the ideas and concepts that bind
and interpret it.
- Surely, no
reasonable person can argue that it behooves us, as a global people, to
understand intellectual properties better than we do. We need to open the paths
to new insights and wisdom so we might live within peaceful disagreements until
we find yet higher grounds of understanding.
- The two
businesses we visit today are doing what was unthinkable prior to the 1950's --
they are taking their own intellectual processes, and writing software
programs, that cause machines to mimic those processes. They are building
thinking machines. Computers now have a very humanlike capability to collect,
sort, and parse data so it becomes organized. That data, now information,
awaits human interaction, and it has become a primary driver in the exponential
growth of "information overload."
- There is so
much information, so many choices, it is so overwhelming, and we all feel quite
inadequate just "to keep up." Something has to happen. And, that something is
knowledge management tools. And not a minute too soon! We have already lost too
many of our intelligent people to mindless games, gaming, and other forms of
escapism. The information overload is that daunting.
- This subject
is one of the most important subjects we can address as a people.

- MISSION &
VISION STATEMENTS: Have a clear mission and vision statement. We here at
SmallBusinessSchool have some work to do! We know our
mission and
vision are too long.
If you
have strong clear statements and general agreement about their place in the
business, post them on a bulletin board. Then, every month or so, ask somebody
what they are. Give them $50 if they get them right. Think about
it.
