Sydney and the World: Today you meet an
artist who, like so many artists, is following his own heart. Often there is a
price to pay when you follow your own heart. The art community's elite were not
gentle on this man and his work. But Ken Done stood firm within his vision,
perservered, and today even his critics are giving him his due.
He has become one of Australia's most-beloved and
respected artists with his own world-class following.
One of the biggest problems some critics have is
the success of others. If something is a commercial success, then an elitist
feels empowered to criticize, "Plebian. Sold out to the masses." And what these
often rather intellectually-gifted, but artistically- average people
have you ever seen a critic's work with a paintbrush? fail to see is that
the art has struck an emotional, perhaps even a deep spiritual vein, within
that buying public. The buyer-participant has understood a moment perhaps more
profoundly than the critic ever will (or, can).

- TRANSCRIPT CASE STUDY: By reading
the entire transcript of this episode of the show causes
one to reflect on key ideas in critical ways. You will find that you can easily
bounce from the transcript to the
case study guide from
within that dialogue. Initially th case study guides were prepared for the
special broadcast by PBS into the schools and universities throughout the USA.
Since that time, Prenctice Hall and Thomson Learning have included these case
studies in their best-selling business textbooks.
- BACKGROUND: A rather comprehensive look
at the scope of Ken Done's work can be found in Janet McKenzie's book, "The Art of Ken Done" (Craftsman
House 2002). Making art that talks to our soul makes us feel good about life
and even about each other.

COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS. Was the show
inspirational and/or educational? We hope this episode of the show is both!
- How do I start a
business? :
Every
week we get email from people asking us, "How do I start a business? And, what
business should I start?" We might ask these folks to watch this episode of the
show and then ask, "How might you become more like Ken Done?"
 The simple
answer might be, "Master your talent in the commercial world, then decide to
break free." In Ken's example, it took eighteen years as an Art Director then
Creative Director. And, he was good. In 1967, while at J. Walter Thompson, he
earned the advertising industry's top award, the Cannes Gold Lion. But, if it
were easy, around the age of forty, we would find people abandoning the
corporate world in droves. But most people stay where there is security. Ken
did not.
 This episode
of the show is to explore why some people start their business and why others
just talk about it.
There is a special suspension of reality that is
necessary to start a business. It is about deep seated beliefs on one hand.
Passion on another. It is about feeling, "If I don't do this my life
will be incomplete."
Unfortunately, however, many people do not
discover their "this" throughout their lifetime. Certainly Ken Done
has.
