Key Idea: Adopt a White Hat Position

An overview of this episode ends with Art Wong of Symantec.  He is one of the world's experts within the IT security.  He'll help you protect your small business  assets from from attack.  More...

Key Question:

A:

Try buying insurance to protect your business.

Your insurance agent can write any type of business protection you want.  When you work  with the right agent, they will insist on plans,  procedures  and steps to protect you and your business.  When twas the last time you did a backup?  You can copy data on a regular basis and store it in a safe place away from your business.

This episode of the show opens with the statement, "It's the best of times and the worst of times. We have super powers at our fingertips, yet bad things can happen to good people and all that power can go to darkness overnight."

Q: With so much knowledge and access to knowledge, more wealth than ever in the history of the world, why hasn't good judgment, ethics, graciousness, and fairness finally triumphed over all the various forms of nastiness and evil in the world?

A: Human will is still a substantial mystery. And, there is seemingly no end to the history, scripture, poetry, and sagas about the battles between good and evil. It is the role of all of us to fight back against the unethical and the evil, and to educate and rehabilitate those who lack judgment, ethics and fairness. We lift up the quote of Art Wong of Symantec, "We don't deserve to be broken into." We all do need to rediscover and enrich the meaning of privacy.

This episode of the show is our invitation to work together with the thought leaders and doers to secure our virtual boundaries and to help educate everybody about the importance of intellectual property and intellectual property rights. We have a long way to go, so let's get to work!

Most Americans don't realize that the US Small Business Administration has the responsibility to be part of the relief brought to areas when physical disasters occur.

Q: What is the biggest problem faced by an owner who has been hit by a physical disaster?

A: Other than the emotional devastation, the biggest problem is ready cash. The big insurance companies are excellent at arriving on the scene and getting cash into the hands of customers. However, so often the insurance does not pay enough to put all the puzzle pieces back in place. The SBA's job is to make very quick, low interest loans to fill the cash gap so often left by insurance pay-outs. Hector Barreto, the SBA Administrator from Washington, DC is from California and he has an insurance background! He appears within this episode with two district directors. The SBA is an open resource for any small business person. We all should get to know your regional and state people in the SBA. On the resource page for every state and linked from every show, there are listings of the SBA contacts.

Think about it

Have you audited your current insurance program? Is it time to re-think the type of coverage you have and for what? Is there a way to insure the data recovery period?

Clip from: Protect Your Priceless Data - Understand Security

Meet Art Wong of Symantec, data security guru

Silicon Valley, Seattle, San Diego:  One of the biggest problems in small business today is that we under-estimate the value of our data and we have trouble believing anything can happen to those computers - until it does. And, it will. Issues that face each of us range from viruses to automated internet attacks to outright theft and natural disasters. The cost of these issues in lost information and lost time sometimes is the business itself. Most of us know we need to take a few steps to secure our data but simply do not know where to start.  This episode of the show is our 1-2-3. Please, have somebody in your business become an expert. If you are a sole proprietor, you'll just have to do it!

Adopt a White Hat Position

HATTIE: (In the Studio) Hi. I'm Hattie Bryant. It's the best of times and the worst of times. We have super powers at our fingertips, yet bad things can happen to good people and all that power can go to darkness overnight. We turn to experts and small business owners to learn how to protect ourselves from natural disasters and nasty people.

HATTIE: (voiceover) 9/11 rained down devastation, destruction and death. Fires, winds, rains, and earth have destroyed billions in assets including thousands of small businesses.

The San Diego fires burned hundreds of thousands of acres turning homes and businesses into ash and rubble. If your business was hit by a physical catastrophe, would your valuable data be safely stored in another location?

HATTIE: (voiceover) Hector Barreto is the Administrator of the Small Business Administration (SBA).

HECTOR BARRETO: During September the 11th, 90% of the recipients of disaster loans were businesses and only 10 % were homeowners and renters.

HATTIE: (voiceover) Every year, millions of SBA dollars help victims of physical disaster. And, every day these people help us prevent cyber-disaster caused by nasty people armed with viruses* and ill-intent. In this episode you'll meet David Perry of Trend Micro ...

DAVID PERRY: What is a virus? A virus is any program that makes copies of itself.

HATTIE: And Robin Matlock of McAfee Security ...

ROBIN MATLOCK: As soon as you connect to the Internet, if you don't have proper protection in place, you're a sitting duck.

HATTIE: And Art Wong of Symantec ...

ART WONG: People who go on the Internet and use email and surf, they don't deserve to be broken into they don't deserve to get viruses. They don't deserve to get worms or blended threats.

HATTIE: These are some of good guys to help us keep the bad guys out and our businesses running.
